The Assistants Reviews
The New York Times Book Review
“Five pages into reading The Assistants, you know Perri has a hit on her hands...Nine to Five meets Thelma and Louise—except nobody dies at the end, rape is student debt and nearly every woman we meet is a survivor.”
Kirkus starred review
“Attention readers fed up with their jobs: call in sick tomorrow and dive into this debut crackling with the energy of handfuls of underpaid, underappreciated, tired-as-heck assistants hungry for what's owed them.”
Booklist starred review
“Perri’s debut is reminiscent of the golden era of early-aughts chick-lit...The characters’ millennial concerns...ring true, making this a winner for readers who long for the return of light, clever novels with young, professional women at their center.”
Publisher’s Weekly
“If the characters of HBO’s Girls were capable of larceny and blackmail, they could be the main characters of Perri’s sharp first novel...Perri has a gift for the glib one-liner, and reserved Tina and glamorous Emily make for a great pairing, resulting in a smart and fresh novel.”
People
“Anyone who’s ever struggled to pay down a student loan and make the rent on that rat-infested apartment will savor this wry, keenly observed debut.”
The Skimm
“This read is Ocean’s Eleven meets The Devil Wears Prada, and it’ll go fast.”
Vulture
“The Assistants is fun, fast-paced, and full of heart.”
When Katie Met Cassidy Reviews
Entertainment Weekly
“[When Katie Met Cassidy is] a testament to that and a celebration of sexuality and female power.”
NPR
“Perri’s lively and funny voice brings a fresh perspective to that familiar and beloved story of a single girl finding love in the big city.”
Elle
“A film-ready rom-com about finding love when you least expect it (as deliciously fun as her last novel, The Assistants).”
Buzzfeed
"Set against the twinkling backdrop of New York City with an unforgettable cast of queer supporting characters, this vibrant novel feels like it’s just waiting for a big-screen adaptation."
Nylon
“This smart, funny novel fills a space in the romantic comedy genre by giving readers something missing in the genre: a celebration of queerness, in all its dynamic glory.”
Book Reporter
“If you thought Perri was at her best in The Assistants, get ready for a totally new side of her seemingly limitless talent… A pitch-perfect nod to Nora Ephron’s classic… Both a lighthearted romance and a deeply nuanced exploration of identity, When Katie Met Cassidy truly has it all.”
Out Magazine
“Perri, whose debut, The Assistants, was a rollicking ode to the pleasures of punching up, is back... For fans of: pop culture references, hot lesbian sex scenes, bar fights.”
